William J. Barrett January 16, 2011 William J. Barrett, "Frag", 89, of Westvale passed away suddenly Sunday morning at his home. Bill is predeceased by his loving wife of 43 years, the former Jeanne L. McArdle, and his brother Richard Barrett and sister Helen Barrett Petri. Bill grew up on Tipperary Hill during the depression. His Irish upbringing during this time in history gave him a strong will to provide for his family and country, to give of himself and to expect nothing in return. Bill proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII from 1942 to 1945. He spent much of his time in the service in the South Pacific on a small island named Tuvalu. While on leave in December 1944, he traveled home to Syracuse where he and Jeanne were married. Bill was a Firefighter for the City of Syracuse for 33 years from 1951 to 1984. Next to his family, his time in the United States Navy and as a Firefighter for the City of Syracuse were his two greatest sources of pride. He is survived by all eight of his children; Dianne (Adam) McClusky of Hilton Head Island, SC, Donna Barrett (Rob Orizino) of Baldwinsville, Doreen Barrett Lancaster of Westvale, Debra Barrett (Norm) Eaton of Onondaga Hill, Dennis (Nyla) Barrett of Syracuse, Denise Barrett of East Syracuse, Daniel Barrett of Westvale, David Barrett of Syracuse. Bill is also survived by 12 grandchildren, of whom he was very proud and three great grandchildren. Services: 9:00 a.m. Friday at Tindall Funeral Home and 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, 216 N. Lowell Ave. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 1921 W Genesee St. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Processing Center, PO Box 8958, Topeka, KS 66608-8958 or the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org
