Richard E. "Lefty" Erwin December 21, 2010 Richard E. "Lefty" Erwin, 78, of Fairmount passed away Tuesday. Born in Syracuse, he was a graduate of Cathedral High School, LeMoyne College, and attended Queens University. Lefty was a US Army Veteran and served during the Korean War. He was a steamfitter for Local 267. He was a three sport athlete in school, baseball, basketball and football. In his later years he traveled the country and the world playing in senior softball leagues including with the Senior Cyclones. He was proud of his Irish heritage and was an avid Notre Dame and Yankee fan. Survivors: his wife of 50 years, Jeanne C. (Plume) Erwin; devoted son, Richard A. Erwin; daughter, Mary (Patrick) Gaffney; grandchildren, Katie and Patrick Gaffney IV, and Sara Erwin; sisters, Ann Hubert and Irene Erwin; several nieces nephews and cousins. Services: 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Tindall Funeral Home and 9:00 a.m. at St. Brigid-St. Joseph Church. Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery with military honors. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 1921 W. Genesee St. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Brigid & St. Joseph Food Pantry, 318 Herkimer St. Syracuse, NY 13204 or the Humane Association of CNY, 4915 W. Taft Rd.
