Dear John, Dave, Annie, Donna and all the Blakely family, So sorry for your loss. Naturally, as soon as I heard the sad news, I got out Mrs. Blakely's wonderful memoir "I am One of These" and read it through again. She had autographed a copy to "Jeanne(my mother) and Pete" back in 2004. She sure had an amazing life. I guess my favorite lines in book were the last ones where she wrote " When someone asked me why I was writing my memoirs now, I said' Unless I do it now, it might not get done . I' ll be eighty my next birthday." That was in 2003. There's really no reason to be surprised that Mrs. Blakely's book is such a beautiful one. Writing was her profession. We have lost a treasure. Dear Johnnie, Did you remember I worked for her on News For You mailings one college summer? Then years later, as a teacher of English as a Second Language, I subscribed to the paper, using it as a supplementary text for my ESL learners. It was at a perfect level for intermediate learners covering actual current events of high interesy and a huge addition to the classroom. Bless your mom for her contributions to humanity. Sue

Charles,Donna, John and David, my condolences and also praise for Caroline and her wonderful life. Her sociable nature and generosity made her many friends in life. Like other Miller children she had fortitude and strong convictions. I am sorry that our families have not been closer and will make every effort to be at the next gathering. I did see cousin John and Jackie in Mexico City about a year ago before his wife, Diana, passed away. Kay and I , Elysia and David are all doing well and always welcome visitors who come to Washington state. Celebrate the memories of your mom's life and keep her generous spirit in your lives. So many of Caroline's colleagues and students have preceded her in her journey, so their words won't be here. But, in both Easy English and well-edited volumes, they would have wonderful, amusing, inspiring memories of her life and work. I miss their writing and their thoughts. My sister, Nancy Gridley, joined her at Laubach Literacy International/New Readers Press in 1966, and News For You was their baby, their mission, their passion for so many years. I entered their sphere as a Newhouse grad student when I was a GA at News For You, and later a temporary editor on the newspaper during maternity leaves and summers. I hear their words even now when I'm editing. More recently, I treasure the memories of lunches with Caroline, Dr. Bob, my sister and brother-in-law Charles Miller, Kay Freeman and her husband, and other Laubach alums as we could find and recruit them. Now one more person who knows the obscure fact that Barack Obama, Sr., was accepted into the Laubach grad program in 1960 at SU has moved from this life. This message isn't in third- or sixth-grade English, Caroline, but I hope you find it well edited!
