Obituary of Stephen J. Carney
Stephen J. Carney, 68, passed away November 22, 2024. Steve was born in Boston, MA on July 20, 1956. He graduated from SUNY Potsdam and went on to get dual Master Degrees in Education and Performance from Syracuse University.
He taught band and instrumental music at Bishop Ludden, Bishop Grimes and Pine Grove Middle School for a combined 35 year career. He played trumpet professionally with many local bands including Mario DeSantis, Stan Collela and the Sunday Night Road Band. He was proud to have played with "big" names when they came to Syracuse. Barry Manilow, Willie Nelson, Natalie Cole and the Temptations were a few of them.
After music, one of his favorite things was flying. He was studying to become a pilot until his illness robbed him of the opportunity.
Steve is survived by his wife of 26 years, Kathy and step daughter, Nicole DeFurio. He is also survived by brothers, Paul (Caroline) and Patrick (Susan); sister, Cathy (Bill) Perkins and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be 3pm to 6pm Tuesday, November 26 at Tindall Funeral Home, 1921 West Genesee St. with a service to follow at 6pm.
