My sincere condolences to Steve’s family. I was a member of the Music Department at East Syracuse-Minoa when Steve taught at Pine Grove. I taught Vocal music at Pine Grove for one year and spent the rest of my teaching time at the Elementary level. Our paths did not cross very often, but I knew of Steve’s great reputation as a teacher and professional musician. I am saddened to hear of his passing.

I was shocked and dismayed to read in Sunday's paper about Steve's passing. He was one of the great musicians performing in Central New York and was a really terrific trumpet player. I was his Instructor in Trumpet performance at Syracuse University's Music School. Stephen Carney was a winner in every detail. I enjoyed his sound, his musicianship, and his intelligence. What a loss....

This is very sad to hear. Mr. Carney taught my sons at Pine Grove Middle School. He couldn’t have been a nicer man. How fortunate they were to have such a talented, dedicated music teacher. What a positive influence he was to his students!
My sincerest condolences to his family.

I had the great pleasure of being Steve's classmate and colleague through his long musical career. We shared the stage for countless shows of all kinds behind the world's most famous names in entertainment. He was a mainstay on the regional scene, the "go-to" trumpeter for any setting - and a gentleman to boot. I'll miss him terribly. RIP Stevie!

My greatest condolences to Steve's family. He was one heck of a teacher! Although he was my music teacher at Pine Grove many moons ago he taught us way more then just music! He was one the nicest and coolest teachers we had! He will greatly be missed! May he RIP

Our condolences to Steve's Family. I worked with Steve at Pine Grove and we shared many a lunch together discussing music and current happenings. He was an exceptionally talented and humble man. So easy to talk to and laugh with. God Bless you all as you grieve your loss. May your treasured memories comfort you.

Mr. Carney opened my musical world up beyond just my clarinet the day he asked if anyone wanted to try the alto clarinet. That was the beginning of a constant push for what instruments I could learn. I feel like I owe him my instrumental expansion to him. I remember him always smiling, never in a terrible mood. As an 8th grade music teacher, I’m sure he had his frustrations, but I don’t remember him showing it. I was so glad I had the opportunity to see him perform with the Stan Colella Orchestra once. He was my favorite 8th grade band teacher, and I will always remember him that way, trumpet in hand. Thank you for the music.

Dear Kathy and Nicole- I am so sorry to learn of the passing of your beloved husband and stepfather. I know my sister Susan and her daughter Elaina thought very highly of him.
I hope you can find peace in knowing he had a life well lived filled with love and music. Heaven has gained a musician for the heavenly chorus.
Take care- Carol Nolan Chen
