My deepest condolences to The Lavin family. I played Little League baseball with Rick and grew up just around the corner from him on Clover Rd. He was so dedicated to his craft, a great long distance runner. I have great admiration and respect for anybody who can strive for perfection like that. God Bless

I will never forget Rich’s kind support for me and my students in the computer lab at Edward Smith School. He was always there to help, with a smile. Our second grade group shared laughter over lunch, bringing jokes or funny things that had happened during our day. I am out of town and very sorry that I will not be able to attend the calling hours to offer my condolences in person. My prayers are with you all.

Rose Anne,
I am so very sorry to see you have lost your son. I cannot imagine the pain.
Both you and Dick were special people during our St. John’s days and you left a mark on our hearts with your beautiful smile and Dick’s love for basketball at SJCA.
Know you will be in my prayers.

I knew Mad Dog for several years before I knew his real name. We were good friends for almost 40 years, and he's one guy I'll really miss. He was known and respected by coaches and athletes throughout Central New York and beyond. He loved to tell me Reardon, Arnie, Wiltse and Hughes stories and probably told others stories about me as I told stories about him. Willing to help at the drop of a hat, an amazing official at the finish line (and anywhere else), and always making decisions that favored the kids, each time we hosted a track meet in B'ville we sought his help. He was kind to everyone and was always willing to help inexperienced athletes in any way he could, even at the risk of setting himself on fire, which he did once when he placed his starting pistol in his pocket to help a young lady with her starting blocks. Mad Dog was an encyclopedia of CNY runners, coaches and meets that have taken place over the past 40+ years. Much of that knowledge is now gone, but I'm sure we will remember the conversations, warm moments and friendship. Thanks for the memories, Mad Dog.

Dear Lavin and friends of Rick,
I am so shocked to read about Rick’s passing. I was a rookie Track Official in the days mentioned. I was amazed at the concentration and organization that the Senior Track Officials had! I learned a lot more about Track and Field by working along side them all! Rick was an awesome teacher. I’m sorry we lost track of each other.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
