Obituary of Sr. Mary Martin Holly

Sr. Mary Martin Holly December 27, 2011 Sister Mary Martin Holly, 88 years old, embraced death on Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at Jolenta Convent, Syracuse. She was one of 13 children born in Tresckow, PA to George and Susan Havrilla Holly. She was a Sister of St. Francis for 70 years. She received a Bachelor Degree from Le Moyne College and a Master's Degree from St. Bonaventure University. She was a Catechetical teacher for 16 years, a principal, teacher and social worker in many parishes and schools in NY, NJ and California. Sister will always be remembered for her years of devoted service to her community, for her kindness, prayerfulness, thoughtfulness, patience, spirit of acceptance and marvelous sense of humor. She was a loving individual who endeared herself to all those whom she encountered, especially to the sisters, caregivers and visitors at Jolenta Convent. One of her claims to fame was that she was among one of the first sisters to drive a car. She was predeceased by five brothers, Joseph, John, Cyril, Raymond and Brother Michael. She is survived by two brothers, Vincent and George and by five sisters, Mary, Therese, Suzanne, Kathleen, and Joanne and by her Franciscan Sisters. Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony Convent Chapel. Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony Convent Chapel, 1024 Court St. Contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Development Office, 1118 Court St., Suite #32, Syracuse, NY 13208.
