Obituary of James E. Murphy
Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
James Murphy, 92, of Solvay, formerly of Westvale, passed away peacefully Saturday evening. Raised on the south side of Syracuse, James attended St. Anthony of Padua and Onondaga Valley Academy. During World War II, James joined the Marines and served with the 4th Marine Division in the Pacific, defending our country by seeing action on Kwajalein Atoll, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima.
After the war, James attended Paul Smith's College and Syracuse University. His life work involved newspaper advertising and included a brief period owning and publishing the Camillus Advocate newspaper. He also worked in later years with Time Warner. His great passions in life included time spent with family, reading, gardening, football, and golf. Visits from family, particularly Sunday afternoons, were always greatly appreciated. His love for reading is evidenced by his extensive library. He loved to plant things and watch them grow. These abilities were passed on to his daughter. As for football, he played while at St. Anthony's and later with the semi-pro Valley Indians. He watched countless football practices and games for his sons and grandsons. As for golf, he played regularly well into his mid-eighties, always insisting on walking the course.
He was predeceased by his parents and siblings, and his beloved wife of nearly 62 years, Louise (Lutz) Murphy. Survivors: daughter, Linda (John) LaConte of Liverpool, sons, Michael (Dawn) Murphy of Liverpool, Timothy (Sandy) Murphy of Liverpool, and Daniel (Shari) Murphy of Camillus; his ten grandchildren, Andy, Steven, Christopher, Sean, Michael, Zachary, Hilary, Chelsea, Samantha, and Patrick; one great grandchild, Morgan, and several nieces and nephews.
