John began working at Niagara-Mohawk in 1951, bowled and golfed in the company's employee leagues, and retired as a building maintenance crew foreman in 1975. He continued golfing after retirement, when not playing the role of elder to the extended family. He was predeceased by Marion, and by his brothers, Peter A. and Francis J. Reap.
