Obituary
Obituary of John Phillip Banazek
Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John “Cappy” Banazek, 84 passed away at Loretto Heath care facility. Cappy was the youngest of 7 children and the last member of his family generation. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Anastasia, his brothers Chester, Stanley, Alex and Joe. He also had two sisters Helen and Ann. His parents were Polish immigrants, who raised their 7 children on the east side of Syracuse. The family started out on Regal St and moved from Regal Gardens when Rt. 690 was built. The family then settled at 1506 Burnet Ave. Cappy and his brothers were well known golfers from Eastwood. They all started playing at Sunnycrest Golf course, where they spent many hours playing and practicing. All of the Banazek brothers passed the love of the game onto the next generation. Thanks to them the game is enjoyed by many of the family members today. Cappy was the Interscholastic City Junior Golf Champion in 1945 and 1946. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1952 and served in the Korean War. When he was honorably discharged in 1956 he joined the Syracuse Police Department. He completed his working career in 2000 as a Security Guard at the New York State Fair. Cappy never married and was a well-known customer of many local eating establishments. He could tell you where to get the best breakfast and who “piled it on” for dinner. He spent countless Monday nights at his nieces Denise Erwin’s house where he always brought the loaf of bread for the spaghetti dinner. He enjoyed a glass of wine “heavy on the rocks” before the meal. He would always give it a double thumbs up when done. He always appreciated the kind acts shown to him. He never arrived to any family function without a “care package”.
Survivors: Cappy is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Cappy will be laid to rest next to his brother Chet and his parents in Assumption Cemetery.
“Time marches on.”
