Obituary of Leonard D. Annable
Leonard "Lenny" D. Annable, Jr. of Syracuse passed away August 16, his death a gentle release from a century of life beautifully lived. Born on May 10, 1924 in Marcellus to Ethel and Leonard Annable, Lenny was the oldest of four children. In 1941 he graduated from Marcellus High School and a year later he enlisted in the Navy. As an Aviation Electrical Mate, 3rd class, he served on a carrier in the European theater during World War II until his honorable discharge in November of 1945. Those three years in the US Navy marked not only a great generation’s sacrifice for freedom but also his own record of outstanding service for which he received three medals.
Upon return to civilian life and in the decades that followed, his war experience continually shaped his personal journey of public service and leadership. Lenny held memberships in several veteran organizations, including American Legion Post 0297, VFW Post 8664, and the Sampson WWII Veteran Memorial Association. Rarely did he appear in public without wearing the dark blue cap that signified his identity as a veteran of the war. Other service to community included his 28 years as an active volunteer fireman for the Marcellus and Onondaga Hill Rescue and Fire Departments. At Crouse Hines, his employer for 31 years, he held a foreman position. A second career followed with 18 years at Sears Automotive.
Lenny is pre deceased by Mary Lyons Annable, his wife of 65 years; his brother, Lester; sister-in-law, Jane; sister, Charlotte Stewart; brother-in-law, Bill Lyons, and beloved friend, Evelyn Corso.
Survivors include his sister, Marjorie Hunt; his nephew, William J. Lyons (LuAnne); niece, Karen Beagle (Ken); sister-in-law, Marian Lyons; great-niece, Kelly Beagle; great-nephews, Michael Beagle and Will Lyons, and a host of extended family and friends.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the many caring members of the staffs at both Brookdale and St. Camillus nursing homes.
