Obituary of Jean W. Avery

Jean Wall Avery, 94, of Solvay, NY, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 15, 2023. She passed peacefully at Crouse Hospital, surrounded by her family. Jean was proudly born, raised, and lived her entire life at the same Hazard Street address in Solvay, raising her family with her loving husband of 58 years, Harry Avery. She was the youngest of eight children and a 1947 graduate of Solvay High School. Jean waitressed at Three Rivers Inn and the Belle Mar and retired from Geddes Federal Savings & Loan. With a deep sense of community, she served on the PTA, Boosters, Solvay Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, as a scout leader, and with the Solvay Seniors and Red Hats. Jean spearheaded a committee to save the Solvay Pool and received a village lifetime achievement award in 2019. Immensely proud of her family and their achievements, Jean was a devoted mother and grandmother. She attended all events of those she loved and passed down traditions like card games and family recipes. An avid Solvay and SU athletics fan, Jean loved all sports and bowled at several local lanes. She also enjoyed going to the casino, playing bingo, and planning family reunions. 

Jean was predeceased by her parents, Francis and Mary (Luchsinger) Wall, five sisters, two brothers, and her husband. 

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Blanchard, and Cheryl Harvey, both of Syracuse; sons and their spouses, Steven and Cheryl Avery of Ithaca, and James and Caren Avery of Nashville, TN; nine grandchildren, Kelly Gosha, Rebecca Blanchard, Alyssa MacIntyre, Brenna Thilburg, Kristen and Matthew Avery, and Dr. Ryan, Tyler, and Kylie Avery; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family. 

Calling Hours will be 2-6 pm Sunday, October 22, at Tindall Funeral Home, 1921 W Genesee St. Services will be 11 am Monday, October 23, at Tindall Funeral Home. Burial to follow in Belle Isle Cemetery. Livestream will begin 11am Monday at facebook.com/TINDALLFH
