Obituary of Charles H. O'Neil

Charles O'Neil November 2, 2011 Charles H. O'Neil, Sr., 89, of Syracuse passed away peacefully Wednesday at St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse, NY. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Patricia (Kennedy) O'Neil, in 2010, and his two sisters, Beatrice LaComb and Margaret Finney. Born in Solvay, he was a graduate of Solvay High School. A decorated Navy veteran of WWII, he served from 1943 to 1945 aboard the USS Uhlmann, a Fletcher class destroyer which was part of the Third Naval Fleet (later the Fifth Naval Fleet) in the Pacific Theatre. He retired as an assistant administrative manager in the Construction Services Department of Niagara Mohawk in 1984, following a 32 year career with the company. He was a communicant of Holy Family Church. A long time member of the Pastime Club, he was also a member of the Solvay-Geddes Veterans, and the VFW Post #2893. Surviving are his sons, Charles O'Neil of Skaneateles and Thomas (Mary) O'Neil of Syracuse, his brother Francis (Mary Jane) O'Neil of Syracuse; grandchildren, Jennifer (Rohan) Sebaratnam, Christopher Chiovitti, Thomas (Jenna) O'Neil, Aaron (Kathleen) O'Neil, Brighid O'Neil, MaryKathryn (Peter) Baldwin, Conor O'Neil and Shawn (Kelly) Hines; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Tindall Funeral Home and 11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Church, 127 Chapel Dr. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Skaneateles. Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home 1921 W. Genesee St. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center Foundation, 973 James St., Syracuse, NY 13203.
