Flowers have been brought to funerals for at least 62,000 years—one of the earliest customs practiced by humans. Flowers for a funeral are often used as symbols of mourning and respect for the departed to comfort those who have lost loved ones.

Type Of Flowers For A Funeral

This is the funeral flower arrangement that has proven to be the most commonly requested by clients at Tindall Funeral Home:

  • Carnations- Carnations of varying colors have different meanings and are great for garlands and other arrangements. You can express your love with a red carnation, while your innocence with a pink one. Christians believe the Virgin Mary's tears were used to create pink carnations, making them fitting funeral flowers.
  • Roses- It is customary to use roses at funerals, like at other significant life events. If a red rose represents love, then a white rose must represent innocence and purity. When sent to a funeral, yellow roses symbolize a close friendship, while dark pink roses convey gratitude and respect for the departed.
  • Lilies - They are the most commonly sent funeral flower, and their white, delicate petals stand for innocence and new beginnings. The lily symbolizes the soul's transformation into a pure and childlike form after death. One of the most common flowers used in Christian funeral arrangements is lilies because Christians believe they covered the tomb of the Virgin Mary.
  • Chrysanthemums- As a symbol of one's sincerity and devotion to the deceased, chrysanthemums, or "mums," are frequently used in floral tributes. Florists frequently use mums in soft pastels or green when making bouquets.

Other Common Flowers For A Funeral

Flower arrangements at funerals typically include roses, lilies, carnations, and chrysanthemums. Still, many other flowers can be sent to show sympathy and express feelings fitting for burial, such as:

  • A bouquet of crocuses is often presented to honor someone who consistently spreads positivity and laughter throughout the lives of those around them. At the same time, a magnolia shows appreciation for the natural world.
  • Gladioli are the perfect way to remember a person who has a bold character and a high moral standard.
  • The white camellia and the daffodil are commonly used in child memorial arrangements because they symbolize pure love.
  • Red camellias and orchids can represent passion and ideal love. This is perfect for a spouse or significant other.

You can also carry a bouquet composed of several different flowers. It often becomes the best way to convey nuanced sentiments.
