Rose N. Cali, age 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 4th at Francis House after a short illness. Born in Canastota, NY, and raised in Syracuse, her family and friends will remember her calm, cheerful demeanor, amazing memory, and love of travel. Rose retired to Syracuse after working 34 years in Chicago, Illinois.
Rose began her working life during WWII as a Nurse's Aide in Rome, NY and Syracuse. During the Korean War she spent hundreds of hours as an Air Force Filter Defense volunteer. She retired from 33 years of federal government service and five years with Air Canada. Rose established Local 3531 AFGE for the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in Chicago and was their first President.
Longtime member of the Chicago Park District Outing Club and the Adirondack Club (ADK), she loved traveling, visiting countless sights on 6 continents, always saying that she liked every place equally. At age 84, Rose travelled independently to Beijing, China, enjoying the company of all those she met along the way. Rose was an active member of St. Charles – St. Ann Parish, AARP, Geddes Seniors, American Italian Heritage Association, and Friends Forever. She enjoyed making rosaries for the missions and volunteered for many community organizations in Chicago, IL and Syracuse, NY.
Rose was predeceased by her parents, Rocco and Anna Cali, and her sisters Dorothy Burns (2015) and Nina Cali (2006).
Survived by nieces Becky (James) Gaul of Arlington, VA; Nancy (Timothy) Minor of Falls Church, VA; nephew, William Burns of Fairfax, VA; great nieces and nephews; and many cousins throughout the United States.
Services: 9:30 am Monday at Tindall Funeral Home and 10:00 am at St. Charles Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. The Rite of Committal and burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery. Calling hours will be 4 to 6 pm Sunday at the funeral home, 1921 W Genesee St, Syracuse, NY.
