
Obituary of J. Edward Mahoney
J. Edward Mahoney, 87, of South Onondaga, formerly of Marcellus, passed away at home on Feb. 14th. He was born in Syracuse to Dr. John and Dorothy (Norton) Mahoney.
A graduate of Christian Brothers Academy in 1956, he then attended Niagara University followed by US Army service. In his earlier years, he worked in the insurance industry, then went on to serve as a security officer at Syracuse University and the New York State Fair. He later joined National Grid, where he spent 22 years before retiring in 2003.
In retirement he loved a good diner, good coffee, and good conversation, whether with old friends or someone he had just met. He gave generously of his time, volunteering at Francis House, and the Hancock Military Courtesy Room, also working with Seniors Helping Seniors offering comfort, companionship, and kindness to many. His Irish heritage was a source of pride, and he dearly loved his faithful companion dogs over the years.
He is survived by his daughters Joanne (Randall) Bygall of Syracuse and Christine (Erling) Mowatt-Larssen of Conroe, Texas; and his son Paul (Lori) Mahoney of The Woodlands, Texas. 11grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Ed was predeceased by his wife Darlene; his son James, and his siblings Jean Eustis, Joyce Curry, James Mahoney, and Judy Morgillo.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 11, at 12:00 noon at Most Holy Rosary Church in Syracuse. Burial with military honors will follow at Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ed’s memory to Francis House or Paige's Childhood Cancer Fund.
