Obituary of Philip A. Winkworth
Philip Augustine Winkworth, 65, born in Syracuse, passed away on February 16th after a short illness, with his beloved daughter by his side.
Phil was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy and Onondaga Community College and also attended LeMoyne College. He began his career as a police dispatcher for the Solvay Police Department before joining the Onondaga County 911 Center at its inception, where he worked for 30 years.
Phil was an avid and passionate sports fan. For many years, he held season tickets to Syracuse University basketball and football games and regularly attended Syracuse Crunch and SkyChiefs games. He loved to travel, and every vacation he took included a sporting event, with Yankee games being one of his favorites. Phil had an uncanny knack for memorizing the entire season schedule of his favorite teams months in advance.
His favorite band was the Rolling Stones, and he did a mean impression of Mick Jagger on the dance floor. Phil and his daughter loved to drive around Syracuse listening to Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, and The Beatles. He also loved to watch Gomer Pyle, Happy Days, and any movie with Al Pacino or Robert DeNiro.
Phil is predeceased by his parents, Edwin B. and Rita Winkworth of Solvay, and his half brother, Edwin “Winky” Winkworth of Utica, NY.
Phil is survived by his daughter, Maria Winkworth of Syracuse, his brothers Joseph Winkworth of Solvay, John Winkworth of Delaware, and sister Honey (Gladys) Winkworth of Rochester, NY. Phil is also survived by his trusted cousins, Peter and Fred Seitz of Boston, along with several nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Calling hours will be 4 to 6 PM Friday, February 21 at Tindall Funeral Home, 1921 W. Genesee Street, Syracuse. There will be a private Mass of Christian Burial and interment in Oakwood Cemetery.
