Ethel Mae Axelson

Ethel Mae (Yeomans) Axelson passed away after a bout of pneumonia at age 93 and was active right up until her body succumbed. She was born December 2, 1928 and lived her growing up life in Eastwood in Syracuse, NY. She excelled in school and activities and was voted “most popular” during her teens while attending Eastwood HS. She met and dated Raymond Axelson and they married in December 24, 1949 and had sixty-eight wonderful years together. What a beautiful life she led as a stay-at-home mother to three children, as well as being a strong voice in her community as PTA president and vestry and altar guild member at Calvary Episcopal and St Mark’s. She was a friend to countless people over her lifetime. She worked at Meals on Wheels and ran an aerial photography business with her beloved Ray. She worked as a Foster Grandparent in the Syracuse School District for ten years.

She was predeceased by her parents and brothers, her husband Ray and son Jim and great granddaughter Elizabeth.

She is survived by daughters Diane “DeeDee” (Ken) Miller and Lynn (Tom) Barry and daughter-in-law Janie. She has ten grandchildren and many great grandchildren and even great-great grandchildren. She has been heard saying, “Tell everyone I love them” and that she did. Her no-worry, everything-in-moderation, faith in God, and unconditional caring about others created an amazing legacy that all who have ever known her will remember forever.

She loved to read, do crossword puzzles, play Solitaire and Rummy, take walks, and help serve communion at church. Her final two years after a fall in her apartment brought her to Elderwood at Liverpool during Pandemic times and not only did she survive, she thrived, often helping the staff with other residents. She lived a full life right up until the end. She was an incredible woman who will be missed.
