Obituary of The Honorable Theresa A. Healy

The Honorable Theresa A. Healy, a retired Foreign Service Officer and former U.S. Ambassador, died on April 8, 2016 at the age of 83 in Syracuse, NY. She spent most of her life traveling or residing in McLean, VA. She was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church in Washington D.C. Born to Irish immigrant parents in Brooklyn, NY on July 14, 1932. She attended Catholic schools, and earned her Bachelors from St. John's University in 1954. She taught Elementary School while attending college. She was commissioned as a Foreign Service Officer in 1955. She worked at many Embassy's in Italy, Switzerland, Brussels and New Zealand. She also had many assignments at the National War College, Department of State including the Bureau of European Affairs and Bureau of Intelligence and Research, University of South Florida as a Fellow and Industrial College of Armed Forces as a Faculty member. On August 27, 1980, she was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Sierra Leone. She returned to the United States in 1983 and continued her work with the Foreign Service until her retirement in 1995. She was an avid reader, enjoyed skiing, the theatre, tennis and golf and had many dear friends in the Washington D.C. and Virginia areas and around the world. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Anthony and Mary Healy, her sister and brother in-law, Maureen (Raymond) Keyes, Her brothers and sister in-law, Joseph (Terri) Healy, Francis Healy. Survivors: Ambassador Healy leaves eleven nieces and nephews, Pauline (Richard) Warboy, Theresa Keyes, Marianne Keyes, Veronica (Anargiros) Frangos, Raymond Keyes, Thomas (Ann) Healy, Maureen (David) Cunningham, Diane (David) Winne, Kenneth (Jennifer) Healy, Allison (Doug) Healy-Klemm, Michael Healy; seventeen great nieces and nephews and one great grandniece. Sister in law, Ann Healy-Phipps. The family would like to express their gratitude to the Staff at Jewish Home at Menorah Park for the kindness and care given to Theresa. Services: 9:45 a.m. Saturday at St. Margaret's Church, Mattydale, NY where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. The Rite of Committal and will be at St John's Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens, NY.
